Tin-Can Island Port Revolutionizes Trade Facilitation

 By Lod Onyeji

In a groundbreaking move, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, Customs Area Controller of Tin-Can Island Port Command, has introduced sweeping reforms to streamline operations and enhance trade facilitation. This development comes on the heels of a critical stakeholders' meeting held on February 4, 2025, at the command's conference hall.

The meeting brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including government agencies, terminal operators, freight forwarders, importers, and customs agents. Comptroller Onyeka addressed key operational bottlenecks, particularly the issue of multiple alerts, which had previously hindered smooth cargo clearance at the port.

Under the new reforms, alerts will only be issued by legitimate units, such as the Valuation Department or the Customs Intelligence Unit (CIU), based strictly on intelligence and with Comptroller Onyeka's direct approval. This move aims to ensure seamless operations, where traders who comply with regulations face no undue delays.

Comptroller Onyeka reassured stakeholders that Tin-Can Island Port is committed to fostering a conducive business environment, emphasizing the importance of transparency and collaboration in achieving trade facilitation.

The Customs Consultative Committee (CCC) Secretary, Mr. Eugene Nweke, praised Comptroller Onyeka's proactive approach and commitment to resolving longstanding challenges. Nweke noted that Onyeka's reforms align with the resolutions of the Comptroller General of Customs Conference held in Abuja in 2024.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with stakeholders expressing optimism about the reforms and pledging their support for Comptroller Onyeka's leadership. As Tin-Can Island Port continues to evolve, its commitment to efficient and transparent trade operations is set to revolutionize the maritime industry.
