Nigerian Ports Authority Launches Large-Scale Clean-Up Operation

By Lod Onyeji

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has embarked on a three-day full-scale clean-up and sensitization operation at the Lagos port corridors. The initiative, dubbed "NPA Security Clearance Operations 2025," aims to tackle congestion, security threats, and environmental hazards that have long plagued the Nigerian ports.

Collaboration and Scope

The operation is being carried out in collaboration with the Lagos State Government and relevant security agencies. The scope of the clean-up covers all entry approaches to the Tin Can Island Complex, Lagos Port Complex, Kirikiri Lighter Terminals I & II, and the port environs.

Goals and Objectives

The goal of the operation is to clear out criminal elements, miscreants, and obstructions that hinder the smooth operation of the ports. According to Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, the Managing Director of NPA, the operation will improve the safety and security of the ports, contribute to the economic growth of the nation, and enhance trade facilitation.

International Best Practices

The initiative is in line with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) measures developed by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to ensure the safety and security of ports worldwide.

Stakeholder Engagement

The NPA had previously carried out print and electronic media enlightenment campaigns to sensitize the public on the importance of the exercise. The Authority is seeking public collaboration and cooperation to ensure the success of the clean-up operation.

Environmental Sustainability

The NPA remains committed to achieving environmental sustainability and maintaining a clear and safe port environment. The clean-up operation is expected to benefit not only the ports' operations but also the surrounding communities and the environment as a whole.

Call to Action

The NPA has called on all stakeholders to support and cooperate with the clean-up operation for a safer, more secure, and environmentally friendly port environment.
