Attack on Nigerian Customs Officers Highlights Growing Threat of Armed Smuggling
By Lod Onyeji
Suspected armed drug traffickers attacked Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) officers in Ogun State, leaving two personnel critically injured. The January 22, 2026, incident underscores the escalating risks faced by law enforcement agencies in combating illicit trade. NCS officers had intercepted a 12-tyre truck suspected of carrying illicit drugs and prohibited items in Akokoro, Ogun State, but were attacked by armed hoodlums before reinforcements arrived.
The attackers mounted barricades, blocked access routes, and opened fire on the officers, disabling a Customs patrol vehicle. Deputy Comptroller Olukayode Afeni condemned the attack, assuring that it wouldn't deter the NCS from discharging its mandate. He called on traditional rulers and community leaders to caution their subjects against smuggling and attacks on security personnel.
*Combating Smuggling: Strategies and Initiatives*
The NCS has been actively combating smuggling through:
- *Intelligence-led operations*: Collaborating with agencies and communities to gather intelligence and identify smuggling routes.
*Technology deployment*: Using drones, sensors, and cameras to monitor borders.
*Community engagement*: Educating border communities on smuggling dangers and encouraging reporting.
*International cooperation*: Partnering with neighboring countries and organizations like UNODC.
Successful initiatives include the Waterfront Boat Owners and Transporters Association of Nigeria (WABOTAN) partnership and community awareness programs.
