New Leadership Elected at Nigeria Union of Journalists

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has elected new national officers, with Comrade Alhasan Yahaya emerging as the new National President. Yahaya, who hails from Gombe State, polled 436 votes to defeat his rivals, Comrade Bamidele Atunbi and Comrade Garba Mohammed, who secured 97 and 39 votes, respectively ¹.
The election was conducted at the 8th Triennial Delegates Conference of the Union, held in Owerri, Imo State. The conference brought together approximately 600 delegates from state councils across the country.
Comrade Abimbola Oyetunde was elected unopposed as the Deputy National President, making her the first female to hold the position. Other national officers elected unopposed include Comrade Victor Ndukwe as National Treasurer and Ronke Samo as Vice President of B-Zone (Southwest) ¹.
The election was conducted amidst tight security, with Comrade Mike Ikeogwu serving as the Chairman of the Electoral Committee and presided over by the Representative of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists was established in 1955 during Nigeria's fight for independence. The union acts as a powerful voice for journalists, protecting their rights, negotiating better working conditions, and promoting ethical standards within the Nigerian media ² ³.
