NIMASA Pushes for Amendments to Maritime Labour Convention to Enhance Seafarers' Welfare
By Lod Onyeji
The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is currently reviewing 16 proposals for amendments to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), 2006, also known as the "Seafarers' Bill of Rights." This move aims to align Nigeria's maritime regulatory framework with international best practices, ensuring fairness, inclusivity, and sustainability.
At a recent three-day Tripartite Technical session, stakeholders from government, employers, unions, and international maritime partners gathered to discuss Nigeria's commitment to improving maritime labour standards and seafarers' welfare. NIMASA's Director General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, emphasized the importance of collaboration among sectors to achieve progressive amendments that enhance seafarers' welfare, create a fair business environment, and elevate Nigeria's position as a leading maritime nation.
The sessions focused on various issues, including the impact of new technologies, environmental considerations, and the evolving needs of seafarers. The goal is to improve working conditions while fostering industry growth. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) and other stakeholders played a crucial role in shaping a future where the Nigerian maritime industry remains competitive, resilient, and equitable for all.
As Nigeria vies for the Category C seat at the upcoming International Maritime Organisation (IMO) elections, the need for cooperation among stakeholders to ensure seafarers' welfare is paramount. The MLC, 2006, provides a comprehensive international framework for decent working conditions and fair competition. However, adapting this legislation to address emerging challenges driven by automation, climate change, and economic shifts is essential.
The event brought together representatives from various ministries, unions, and associations, demonstrating the collective commitment to the sustainability of the maritime sector and the protection of seafarers' rights. As NIMASA continues to push for amendments to the MLC, 2006, the agency's efforts to enhance seafarers' welfare and promote a fair and inclusive maritime industry are expected to have a positive impact on the sector.
