Nigeria Customs Service Cracks Down on Smuggling at Apapa Port

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intensified its surveillance efforts at the Apapa Port Command, resulting in significant seizures of prohibited items and unregistered pharmaceuticals. The seizures, valued at ₦921,021,213, include 11 consignments of contraband.
Seizure Details
The seized items include:
- Unregistered Pharmaceuticals: Worth ₦586,511,947, these products lack mandatory NAFDAC registration numbers and certification.
- Expired Food Items: Two containers of expired margarine products were seized and condemned.
- Controlled Equipment: 113 units of drones and communication devices were seized for lack of end-user certificates.
The NCS has escalated its risk assessment protocols at all points of entry, responding to the increasing sophistication of smuggling tactics. Intelligence reports indicate a rise in attempts to import prohibited items through container shipping.
The NCS has collaborated with regulatory agencies, including NAFDAC and ONSA, to enhance enforcement capabilities. The seizures highlight the importance of cooperation in protecting public health and national security.
