The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) recently celebrated a significant milestone in its history, commemorating 70 years of promoting press freedom, advancing professionalism, and defending democracy in Nigeria. The event, held on June 21, 2025, at the Shehu Musa Yar'Adua Centre in Abuja, brought together notable figures, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas.

During the ceremony, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, was honored with the "Media Promoter and Advocate of Press Freedom Award" for his support of press freedom and national development. The award was presented by the Deputy Governor of Bauchi State, Rt Hon Mohammed Jatau, on behalf of the NUJ 70th Anniversary Committee. Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, National Public Relations Officer of the Service, accepted the award on behalf of the CGC, expressing gratitude to the NUJ for recognizing the Comptroller-General's efforts in supporting journalism and enabling the media to function as a vital partner in nation-building.
