*Nigeria and India Deepen Customs Cooperation*
By Lod Onyeji
A recent meeting between the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Indian Customs Administration on the sidelines of the 92nd Session of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Policy Commission has marked a significant step forward in strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.
The meeting, which took place in Brussels, Belgium, reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to deepen strategic cooperation in customs issues, building on the Customs Mutual Administrative Agreement (CMAA) signed in November 2024. Key areas of focus included customs valuation, transfer pricing, and integration of customs and tax systems.
The bilateral engagement has yielded tangible results, including successful seizures of substandard pharmaceutical products in Nigeria, made possible through improved intelligence sharing and operational synergy between the two countries. This cooperation underscores the potential for joint benefits, including more efficient risk management, enhanced revenue assurance, and stronger trade controls.
Nigeria's active participation in the WCO Policy Commission highlights its dedication to international best practices and the modernisation of its customs systems. The meeting reflects a shared vision of a smarter, collaborative, and globally connected customs administration, with both countries committed to advancing trade, security, and institutional collaboration.
The strengthened partnership between Nigeria and India is expected to pave the way for enhanced cooperation and mutual benefits in customs administration, ultimately contributing to the growth and development of both nations.
