A Conversation with Bestman Jumbo: Navigating Security, Inclusivity, and Development in Lagos
By Lod Onyeji
In a candid interview with Bestman Jumbo, President of Team Nigeria for Change, we delved into the complexities of security, inclusivity, and development in Lagos. Jumbo, a seasoned politician and publisher, shared his insights on the city's challenges and opportunities.
The Security Landscape in Lagos
When asked about the biggest security challenges facing Lagos, Jumbo pointed to the influx of people from other parts of Africa, which poses significant security threats. However, he noted that the government has made progress in addressing these issues, citing improved security under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's leadership.
"The number one job of Babajide Sanwo-Olu as Governor of Lagos State is the protection of life and property in Lagos," Jumbo emphasized. "Lagos cannot protect other states, but it can share its experiences and best practices with others."
Community Policing and Security
Jumbo highlighted the effectiveness of community policing in Lagos, where residents are empowered to take ownership of security in their communities. He cited the example of alternative security measures, where individuals who were previously regarded as "useless" are now working with the government to provide intelligence and support security agencies.
Promoting Inclusivity and Diversity
When asked about initiatives to promote inclusivity and diversity in government, Jumbo praised the Lagos State Government's efforts to bring people from different backgrounds and parties into the fold. He noted that Lagos has a reputation for inclusivity, with directors and commissioners from other states and parties represented in government.
"Lagos works on a template," Jumbo explained. "Whoever comes after Sanwo-Olu will have to follow it. You just can't change it. So, it's sustainable."
Land Grabbing and Security
Jumbo also addressed the issue of land grabbing in Lagos, emphasizing the need for citizens to verify documents before buying land. He noted that the Lagos State Anti-Land Grabbing Agency has done a fantastic job in checkingmate land grabbers, but citizens must also take responsibility for protecting themselves.
A Message of Hope
In conclusion, Jumbo's message to victims of land grabbing was clear: report to the authorities and seek justice. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and community engagement in addressing the city's challenges and promoting inclusivity and diversity.
As our conversation came to a close, it was clear that Bestman Jumbo is a passionate advocate for positive change in Lagos and beyond. His insights offer a valuable perspective on the complexities of urban development, security, and inclusivity in one of Africa's most vibrant cities.
