The Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone 'A' of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has made significant strides in combating smuggling and illicit trade in the Southwest region. In a recent press briefing, Comptroller Muhammed Shuaibu announced the seizure of contraband goods worth over N3.14 billion and the arrest of 13 suspects.

*Strategic Operations Yield Results*

The seizures were made during intelligence-driven operations in various locations across the six states of the Southwest geopolitical zone. The confiscated items include 4,068 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 22 used vehicles, 12,125 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), and 57 parcels of Cannabis Sativa, among others.

*Commitment to Protecting the National Economy*

Comptroller Shuaibu emphasized the unit's commitment to protecting the national economy and safeguarding borders. "These seizures underscore the operational capabilities and strategic effectiveness of our operatives," he said. "We will not relent in our mission to uphold the integrity of Nigeria's trade environment and protect our economy from illicit trade practices."

*Recovering Revenue through Intelligence-Driven Operations*

In addition to the seizures, the unit recovered over N47.8 million from questionable declarations and under-valuations between July 18 and August 12, 2025. This recovery was made possible through the issuance of Demand Notices (DNs).

*Balancing Security Enforcement and Economic Growth*

Comptroller Shuaibu reaffirmed the unit's commitment to securing the nation's borders while supporting legitimate trade. "We continue to support legitimate trade through intelligence-driven operations that strike a balance between security enforcement and economic growth, ensuring that lawful traders are not unduly hindered in the process."

The FOU's efforts demonstrate the Nigeria Customs Service's determination to combat smuggling and protect the national economy. As the unit continues to crack down on illicit trade practices, it remains committed to facilitating legitimate trade and promoting economic growth.
