The Nigeria Customs Service Board has approved a De Minimis Threshold Value of $300 for low-value consignments imported through express shipments or passenger baggage, effective September 8, 2025. This move aims to simplify clearance processes, enhance trade facilitation, and provide clarity for e-commerce stakeholders and travelers.

*Key Features of the De Minimis Threshold*

- *Exemption Limit*: Goods valued at $300 or less will be exempted from import duties and taxes, provided they are not prohibited or restricted items.

- *Eligible Importations*: Low-value imports, e-commerce consignments, and passenger baggage are covered under this exemption, restricted to four importations per person per year.

- *Immediate Release*: Eligible consignments will be released immediately without post-release documentation.

- *Penalties for Noncompliance*: Strict enforcement measures will be applied to stakeholders who attempt to manipulate invoices or evade duty obligations, with penalties including forfeiture, arrest, and other sanctions.

*Implementation and Support*

- *Multi-Channel Helpdesk Platforms*: The Nigeria Customs Service will establish dedicated channels to provide timely guidance on compliance requirements, address inquiries, and resolve complaints.

- *Expected Outcomes*: This initiative is expected to stimulate cross-border e-commerce, minimize clearance delays, and further consolidate Nigeria's position as a regional leader in trade facilitation.

- *Disciplinary Actions*: The Board has taken disciplinary actions against officers involved in misconduct, including demotion and reinstatement.

- *Stern Warning*: A stern warning has been issued to all officers against the abuse of banned substances and other forms of unethical behavior, emphasizing the importance of accountability, discipline, and integrity in discharging statutory mandates
