By Lod Onyeji

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has taken a significant step towards enhancing transparency and accountability in the automobile importation process with the launch of the Customs Verification Management System (CVMS). Unveiled on October 20, 2025, by Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, the digital platform aims to curb vehicle smuggling and boost government revenue.

Key Features of CVMS

Centralized Database: The platform creates a centralized database where vehicle details can be traced, verified, and confirmed within minutes, improving operational efficiency and inter-agency coordination.

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)-based Verification: The system enables individuals, importers, and car dealers to confirm the authenticity, origin, and duty payment status of vehicles in real-time.

- *Secure Payment*: Payments can be made using any valid card issued by financial institutions in Nigeria or abroad, with verification results generated instantly.

Objectives and Benefits: The CVMS is part of the NCS's broader digital reform strategy, aimed at simplifying clearance procedures, promoting data-driven operations, and increasing transparency in revenue collection. According to CGC Adeniyi, the system will:

-Reduce Smuggling: Significantly reduce the circulation of smuggled and improperly cleared vehicles.

-Boost Revenue: Increase government revenue through accurate tracking and verification of imported vehicles.

Promote Transparency: Enhance transparency and accountability in the vehicle clearance process.

The launch of CVMS marks a significant milestone in the NCS's transformation drive, reinforcing its commitment to accountability, innovation, and public trust in Nigeria's trade and transport ecosystem.
