By Lod Onyeji
A recent seminar organized by Hynek Media in collaboration with the Media Anti-Corruption Initiative (MACI) highlighted the impact of the B'Odogwu digital platform on trade facilitation and women's contributions to the maritime sector. The event brought together industry experts, freight forwarders, and customs agents to examine the gains and challenges associated with the platform, launched in 2024 to streamline trade processes and reduce human interference in cargo clearance.
A Game-Changer for Trade Efficiency: Dr. Segun Musa, CEO of Widescope Logistics Ltd., praised the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for advancing trade facilitation and increasing revenue generation through B'Odogwu. The platform is a unified customs management system that demonstrates Nigeria's commitment to leveraging technology for trade efficiency and global competitiveness.
Early Results Encouraging: Musa noted that B'Odogwu aims to set a new standard for the NCS across Africa, enhancing trade efficiency and reducing cargo clearance times. Early results from the platform have been encouraging, with participants commending the seminar organizers for shedding light on the transformative impact of B'Odogwu in enhancing automation, reducing corruption, and boosting government revenue.
Women's Involvement Key to Success: Mrs. Rollens Mcfoy, President of Women In Maritime – Africa (WIMA-Africa), emphasized the importance of women's involvement in shaping the future of trade and the blue economy. She challenged industry leaders to give women equal opportunities to contribute, highlighting the crucial role women play in driving operational progress.
Digitalization the Way Forward: Representatives from the maritime industry commended the ongoing push to digitalize Nigeria's port operations, framing it as a mechanism to curb corruption and improve efficiency. The B'Odogwu platform and similar reforms are expected to enhance data management and transparency among freight-forwarding firms, encouraging operators to embrace technology through training and staff development.
A Collaborative Effort: The seminar marked the maiden edition of a collaborative effort to promote transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in Nigeria. As the country moves towards full digitalization, industry stakeholders are urged to adapt and comply with the new systems to ensure success.
