Cracking Down on Contraband: Oyo/Osun Customs' Bold Move Against Smuggling*

n a significant victory for Nigeria's economy, the Oyo/Osun Customs Command has seized smuggled goods worth ₦2.7 billion, dealing a substantial blow to illicit trade. This achievement is part of the command's broader efforts to boost revenue collection, with ₦77.88 billion generated in 2025, marking a 17.5% increase from 2024.The seized items include 2,234 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 1,112 used tyres, 562 kegs of Premium Motor Spirit, and 37 wraps of cannabis sativa, among others. According to Deputy Comptroller Wale Moses Adewole, Acting Customs Area Controller, the command's efforts are yielding results, with revenue collection exceeding targets. In December 2025, the command collected ₦8,374,471,941.10, surpassing the 2025 revenue target with a 15.22% increase.
The command's success can be attributed to improved compliance, effective monitoring, and collaboration with sister security agencies. "We remain committed to our zero-tolerance policy against smuggling and economic disruption," Adewole stated. The command has also implemented reforms to enhance border security and surveillance, addressing challenges like inadequate infrastructure and corruption.
