Escalating Violence Against Customs Officers in Ogun State: A Growing Concern

Recent violent attacks on customs officers in Ogun State, Nigeria, underscore the escalating threats faced by law enforcement personnel combating smuggling activities. On January 31, 2026, officers from the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Ogun I Area Command intercepted a convoy of motorcycles carrying smuggled foreign parboiled rice, only to be ambushed by a large mob armed with dangerous weapons. This incident marks the second attack on customs officers within a week, highlighting the brazen determination of smugglers to resist law enforcement efforts.

The NCS has intensified anti-smuggling operations, resulting in significant seizures of arms, ammunition, narcotics, and other prohibited items. In 2025, the Ogun I Area Command recorded 497 seizures, with a total Duty Paid Value of N4 billion.
