A Beacon of Excellence: Apapa Customs Command Shines in Revenue Generation and Anti-Smuggling Efforts
By Lod Onyeji
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Apapa Area Command has received accolades for its outstanding performance in revenue generation, anti-smuggling operations, and trade facilitation in 2025. Under the leadership of Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba, the Command exceeded its annual revenue target, collecting ₦2.93 trillion, a 24.32% increase from 2024.
Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs (ACG) Mohammed Babandede, Zonal Coordinator, Zone A, praised the Command's significant seizures of narcotics, including cocaine and tramadol, highlighting their critical contribution to national security, public health, and societal safety. "Effective enforcement is crucial in creating a secure environment for legitimate trade to thrive," he emphasized.
The Command's achievements are a testament to the NCS's commitment to excellence. In 2025, the NCS remitted approximately ₦3.7 trillion to the Federation Account, reflecting increased trade activity and aggressive revenue collection measures. This growth underscores the critical role of customs and excise revenues in stabilizing Nigeria's public finances.
*Impact on Nigeria's Economy*
The NCS's efforts have far-reaching implications for Nigeria's economy. By diversifying revenue sources, the NCS supports infrastructure development, healthcare, education, and other public services. The Service's anti-smuggling efforts protect local industries, fostering an environment conducive to industrial growth and job creation. Moreover, the NCS's contributions help reduce Nigeria's debt burden, a necessary step for spurring development.
Despite these achievements, the NCS faces challenges, including alleged corruption, smuggling, and inadequate infrastructure. Limited technical capacity and bureaucratic constraints also hinder the Service's effectiveness. To address these issues, the NCS has initiated reforms, including the Trade Modernisation Project, which leverages cutting-edge technologies to automate and streamline customs operations.
The Apapa Area Command's success is a beacon of hope for Nigeria's economic future. As the NCS continues to navigate challenges and seize opportunities, its efforts will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the country's development trajectory.
