Tin Can Island Port Command Embracing Digital Transformation
By Lod Onyeji
The Nigeria Customs Service is gearing up for a major overhaul with the introduction of a fully paperless regime, and Comptroller Frank Onyeka, Area Controller of Tin Can Island Port Command, is leading the charge. Speaking to senior maritime journalists, Onyeka expressed confidence that the command is ready for seamless digital operations, with the rollout scheduled for the second quarter of the year.
The command has already shown impressive results, generating ₦609 billion in revenue last year, with a significant increase in collections. In January, the command recorded ₦145 billion, a rise of over ₦29.9 billion from the previous year's ₦116 billion. Onyeka attributes this success to the command's shift in operational philosophy, focusing on trade facilitation and revenue collection.
Key Highlights:
- Paperless Regime: Customs aims to release containers without physical contact with agents or importers.
- B’Odogwu Platform: An indigenous digital platform supporting the reform's success.
- Revenue Focus: Prioritizing "collectible revenue" over "maximum revenue".
- Inter-Agency Collaboration: Enhanced engagement with government agencies for faster clearance timelines.
Onyeka emphasized that the paperless system will improve efficiency, reduce congestion, and enhance national security. With the command's proactive approach and commitment to transparency, Tin Can Island Port is poised to become a model for Customs operations nationwide
