Cracking Down on Contraband: Ogun 1 Area Command of NCS's Bold Move to Protect Local Industries

By Lod Onyeji

In a significant stride towards protecting Nigeria's local industries and curbing smuggling activities, the Ogun I Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted contraband worth ₦1.35 billion. This achievement underscores the command's commitment to fostering a competitive trade environment, safeguarding citizens' health, and preserving cultural heritage.

Acting Customs Area Controller (CAC) Oladapo Afeni attributed the success to intelligence-driven operations and collaboration with host communities. Notable seizures include 2,539 kegs of vegetable oil, 4,325 cartons of foreign spaghetti, 204 bags of foreign parboiled rice, and 2,547 parcels of cannabis sativa. The command also recovered four live pangolins and two antiquities, handing over seized items to relevant agencies, including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The Ogun I Area Command's efforts have yielded impressive results, with a 1,082% increase in revenue generation, totaling ₦285.6 million. This remarkable growth can be attributed to the command's strategic approach, focusing on intelligence gathering and community engagement.

Countries like Singapore and Australia have successfully combated smuggling and protected local industries through robust enforcement mechanisms and technological advancements. Singapore's Customs and Excise Department employs advanced scanning technology and intelligence gathering to detect and prevent smuggling activities. Similarly, Australia's Border Force uses sophisticated surveillance systems and collaboration with international partners to intercept contraband.

The Ogun I Area Command's efforts are a testament to Nigeria's commitment to protecting its local industries and combating smuggling activities. As the command continues to intensify its operations, it is essential to explore ways to sustain this momentum and address emerging challenges.

What do you think are the key factors contributing to the success of the Ogun I Area Command's anti-smuggling operations? How can Nigeria's Customs Service leverage global best practices to further enhance its efforts?
