Cracking Down on Smuggling: Nigeria's Oyo/Osun Customs Command Makes Stride

By Lod Onyeji

In a bold move to curb illicit trade, Nigeria's Oyo/Osun Customs Command has seized goods worth over ₦2.5 billion, while generating ₦14.7 billion in revenue. Led by Deputy Comptroller Moses Wale Adewole, the Command's efforts underscore Nigeria's commitment to protecting its economy and upholding the rule of law.

Under Adewole's leadership, the Command has prioritized professionalism and accountability, intensifying surveillance and enforcement strategies to combat smuggling. Notable seizures include 1,603 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 123 bales of used clothing, and 1,351 pieces of used tyres. These efforts have yielded a 46.22% increase in revenue generation, with ₦14.7 billion collected, up from ₦10.1 billion in 2025.

Similar successes are evident in countries like Singapore, where the Customs and Excise Department seized over SGD 8 million worth of contraband in 2022, and Australia, which collected AUD 14.5 billion in customs revenue in 2021-2022. These examples demonstrate the efficacy of robust enforcement strategies and public-private partnerships.

However, challenges persist. According to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, smuggling costs the country an estimated ₦1 trillion annually. To combat this, the Oyo/Osun Command is leveraging technology, intelligence gathering, and stakeholder engagement.

"Our strategy involves collaboration with traditional rulers, law enforcement agencies, and the public," Adewole said. "We urge citizens to report suspicious activities, enabling us to nip smuggling in the bud."

The Command's efforts have earned recognition, with Comptroller-General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi praising their dedication. As Nigeria continues to navigate economic challenges, the Oyo/Osun Customs Command's success serves as a model for effective enforcement and revenue generation.
