Empowering Women in Maritime: NIMASA Leads the Charge
By Lod Onyeji
As the world celebrates International Women's Day, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender equality in the maritime sector. Director General Dr. Dayo Mobereola emphasized that sustainable progress in the industry requires the contributions of both men and women.
The maritime sector presents enormous opportunities for economic growth, with the global maritime industry projected to reach $3.5 trillion by 2025. However, women remain underrepresented in the industry, making up only 2% of the global maritime workforce, according to the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
NIMASA's efforts to promote gender equality are commendable. The Agency has implemented policies and initiatives to encourage more women to build careers and leadership roles in the industry. This is in line with global best practices, as seen in countries like Norway and Sweden, where women hold over 40% of leadership positions in the maritime sector.
In Norway, the government's "Women in Shipping" initiative has led to a 30% increase in female maritime professionals since 2015. Similarly, Sweden's Maritime Strategy for Sustainable Growth has set a target of 40% female representation in the maritime sector by 2030.
Dr. Mobereola's emphasis on inclusive leadership and innovation is timely. Women bring unique perspectives and skills to the maritime industry, and their contributions are essential for sustainable growth. As Dr. Odunayo Ani, President of WISTA Nigeria, noted, "Women in the maritime sector must continue to view compliance, leadership, and innovation from fresh perspectives that encourage inclusivity and sustainable growth within the industry."
The event highlighted the importance of mentorship, capacity building, and regional collaboration in empowering more women to take up leadership roles in the sector. NIMASA's commitment to gender inclusion is a step in the right direction, and it is hoped that other stakeholders will follow suit.
As Nigeria seeks to diversify its economy and boost maritime trade, the role of women in the sector will become increasingly important. NIMASA's efforts will not only promote gender equality but also contribute to the country's economic growth and development.
