NPA Negligence Leads to Return of Truck Gridlock on Seaport Road, MACI Demands Action

The Media Anti-Corruption Initiative (MACI), a non-governmental organization dedicated to addressing corruption and societal issues, has expressed deep concern regarding the persistent truck gridlock affecting the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway and its vicinity. This ongoing congestion is severely hindering the transportation of goods to and from the Lagos seaport.

The gridlock has created significant obstacles for trade facilitation, leading to frustration among both businesses and consumers. The responsibility for alleviating this congestion lies with the Nigeria Port Authority (NPA).

On February 27, 2021, the NPA implemented the Electronic Truck Call Up System (ETO), which initially alleviated some of the traffic issues. However, by early 2026, traffic congestion has resurfaced, largely due to the NPA's apparent disregard for trade facilitation.

It appears that their failure to effectively manage and ensure the proper operation of the ETO system has contributed to the current gridlock. This negligence and inefficiency have triggered a chain reaction, resulting in the return of articulated trucks and traffic jams, which obstruct the timely movement of goods from the seaport.

MACI has voiced its disappointment and concern regarding this situation, highlighting that it not only results in the loss of valuable working hours but also increases the cost of doing business in the country, leading to higher prices for commodities.

From Coconut Bus Stop to Constain Bus Stop, vehicles, particularly tankers, are parked haphazardly along the port corridor, causing significant disruptions and delays in the cargo supply chain.

It is clear that the poor traffic conditions in the port corridor stem from the NPA's neglect and failure to effectively oversee the ETO system. This has not only caused frustration for businesses but has also negatively impacted the economy.

The increased costs associated with clearing consignments and the soaring prices of goods in the market can be traced back to the NPA's inability to manage and ensure the smooth operation of the gridlock.

In conclusion, the resurgence of truck gridlock on the seaport road is a clear reflection of the NPA's negligence and ineffectiveness.

The organization must take immediate steps to address the situation and implement effective measures to ensure the efficient functioning of the ETO system.

Doing so will not only alleviate the gridlock and facilitate trade but will also restore confidence in the country's port operations and enhance the overall economy.

MACI remains committed to advocating for a corruption-free society and will continue to closely monitor this situation, demanding accountability and action from the NPA.
